1. The Silence and the Sirens
The first time I heard the siren
I thought someone had died
Its loudness pierced the night
It stopped me as I cried
It made me miss the quiet
It shattered faith and guilt
It shook the broken heart
That trust had somehow built
Chorus:
The ocean and the highway
A barely seen horizon
The space that floats between
The silence and the sirens
The next time I heard the siren
She was singing by the shore
I could barely see her
The song was sad and pure
I stumbled in my haste
To get a closer look
She flew away without a glance
Quiet as I shook
Chorus
The last time I heard the siren
He moaned and croaked and hissed
He slithered cross a stagnant pond
With graceful muddy bliss
I sat and watched his journey
And heard his subtle scream
Annoying like a whisper
Vivid like a dream
Chorus
02. Poles Apart
Running 'round the world, trying to find each other
But we're running in the same direction
Round and around and around and around
We can never seem to make a connection
I follow you to the ends of the earth
But I haven't found an ending yet
You follow me to the highest peak
But I'm down in the valley of regret
Chorus
Poles apart
Can we just go back to the start
Completely off of the chart
It's beginning to feel
Completely unreal
Like the first crack in a broken heart
Are you just a mirage, a broken dream
A melancholy illusion
No, in my heart I know you're real
Despite this cloud of confusion
So I keep running after you, you running after me
It's a circular situation
But I will follow you, and you will follow me
'Til we find our final destination
Chorus
Bridge
Satellites
Sailing out across the stars
Gravity
Holding us in its arms
Ferris Wheel
Spinning circles of light
Carousel
Painted ponies shining bright
The race has started
Love can't be outsmarted
Though we're forever parted
We're never broken-hearted
Even though we're poles apart
03. The Ravens of Sithicus
Maybe I wasn't an elf
But that's probably not right.
Maybe a raven had told me
To set a trap that night.
But set the trap I did -
But for whom, and where?
Should I do it again?
And how, and when?
Chorus:
I am only a bag of concerns
But that's who I am
That's who we are, who we'll be
Until Soth returns
I was never a knight
Not here really
Or a shadoweaver in the night
Not now really
No no I remember now
It was before actually
Before I felt so confused
Before I had something to lose.
Chorus
What's beyond the mists?
Chorus
04. The Ghosts of the North Pole
Get ready to welcome the hungriest ghosts ever!
The Ghosts of the North Pole!
Ch-ch-chilly we are
Already hearing voices and we haven't got far
G-G-Got to try to free those unsettled souls
To get back to Baffin in a cosmic car
Chorus:
Calling Amundsen, Peary and Byrd
Calling most everyone who hasn't got the word
They're moving back and forth across the Arctic Waste
Locked forever in the endless race
S-s-slowly across the crevasse
Trekking and schlepping on the icy pass
G_G-ghost detectors on stun
Two thirds of the spirit is not under the sun
Chorus
05. Flirtatious Two-Timin' Devil
Well you can spout that jive:
That opposites attract
You can flush your advice
Down the sewer, Mac
I'll give it to you straight
Right on the level
I just slammed the door on
That flirtatious
Two timin' devil
I was fine
With the pitching woo
Blinded by the light
I was Mr. Magoo
Story 'bout a night
On the town with my friends
While I was sick in bed
You know how that one ends
I'll give it to you straight
Right on the level
I just slammed the door on
That flirtatious
Two timin' devil
Two timin' timin'
Double crossin'
Flirtatious devil
Two timin' timin'
Double crossin'
Flirtatious devil
Sittin' on the porch
Swingin' on the swing
Thought my new love
Was a special thing
I'll give it to you straight
Right on the level
I just slammed the door on
That flirtatious two timin' devil
06. Words Fail
The words all fly away
When I look into your eyes
I would whisper in your ear
But my tongue has turned to ice
I can see the moment pass
A flicker then it fades
If I only had the words
I could turn your look my way
I don't know where to go
What to do when I'm with you
I feel like I'm losing my mind
I don't know how this goes
Lost along an empty road
Stars are falling out of the sky
I am mute with no reply
In this silence I am bound
No words can find my tongue
No voice to cry out loud
My song remains unsung
I take your hand in mine
You turn around surprised
And simply ask me, "Why?"
But I am mute with no reply
I don't know where to go
What to do when I'm with you
I feel like I'm losing my mind
I don't know how this goes
Lost along an empty road
Stars are falling out of the sky
I am mute with no reply
07. The Last Thing I Heard You Say
Maybe this is all we get
Maybe it's enough
You said I was a tender trap
I thought that you were tough
More than eggs got scrambled
On that foggy tuneful day
The comfort and the crying
The different shades of gray
Night falls, stars shine
Floating on a ferry cross the bay
Thinkin' 'bout your lips and the end of time
Just before the last thing I heard you say
We took a walk and tried to talk
We heard a sound so sweet
But then it changed and from the beach
It turned into a scream
The siren's bones were washed ashore
Like it was meant to be
We stood around them silent
By the crashing of the sea
Night falls, stars shine
Floating on a ferry cross the bay
Thinkin' 'bout your lips and the end of time
Just before the last thing I heard you say
Oooooh hold me, hold me please
You can't say anything I haven't heard
Just give me that gaze that never ever ends
And don't speak another word
Do you think we were exceptional?
Well maybe, maybe not.
I remember more than you can know
Now that memories are all I've got
Night falls, stars shine
Floating on a ferry cross the bay
Thinkin' 'bout your lips and the end of time
Just before the last thing I heard you say
08. The Sun's Eternal Fury
Bright
Light of
Moon dipping
Night
Slight
Of hand
Far reaching
Flight
The sun the sun
Raging
Fooled once again
The moon the moon
Grinning
The madness of sin
The magic of tides
To see in the night
The waxing and waning
And then out of sight
There's matters of church
and there's matters of state
There's a groaning eclipse
and a shower of grace
The sun rules all;
there's no room for the moon
To shut out the light
and bring on the gloom
It's up to the seasons
A cruel faceless jury
The moon to ignore
The sun's eternal fury
The stars the stars
Blazing
Before they dim
The earth the earth
Gazing
Floats and spins
Feeling
The sun's
Eternal
Fury
Feeling
The Sun's
Eternal
Fury
Feeling
The Sun's
Eternal
Fury
09. The Day The Chickens Came Home
The signs
By the road
Were clear
The time
Of atonement
Was near
The fire and the folly
The shadow that always looms
The words with no language
The traps in all the rooms
Living in the year of rocks and stone
The months of wretched moans
The pain, the shame, the final game of joy and of release
The day the chickens came home
And then
The waiting
In the rain
I still
Remembered
Your name
The simple request
To stand by your side
The bitter denial
The running to hide
Living in the year of rocks and stone
The months of wretched moans
The pain, the shame, the final game of joy and of release
The day the chickens came home
10. This Frozen Heart
This frozen heart…
Cold like the night
Wet like a tear
Filled with regret
As I disappear
This frozen heart…
What good is forgiveness
Waiting to cry
No one looks up
As I pass by
Walk through the day
As if it was night
Letting it go
As if it's the light
This frozen heart…
Beating one more time
Hearing one more sigh
Trying to breathe
Watching the sky
This frozen heart…
Chill in the blood
Pain in the bones
A song on the breeze
That sounds like a moan
Walk through the day
As if it was night
Letting it go
As if it's the light
This frozen heart…
Beating one more time
Hearing one more sigh
Trying to breathe
Watching the sky
This frozen heart…
Chill in the blood
Pain in the bones
A song on the breeze
That sounds like a moan
This frozen heart…
11. The Crooked Promise
I ordered it straight
But it was served with a mix
I cracked a joke to break the ice
It's getting late, I need my fix
I feel like I'm bleeding from my eyes
Where is that man?
I've been waiting here forever
Nursing this drink and this paperback book
It's got dog-eared pages and a torn cover
The bar man is giving me a look
I can't cling to the crooked promise
Let's get it straight, before it's too late
Now the sun sets slowly in the west
I think it's best if you just walk away
It seems my habit took everything from me
It took my heart and left an empty hole
Now there's no more trust, no reason to believe
I no longer have a soul
I can't cling to the crooked promise
Let's get it straight, before it's too late
Now the sun sets slowly in the west
I think it's best if you just walk away
I think it's best if you just walk away
12. Dancing Across the Divide
Well you had your hippie friends
I had my Goth Brigade
We eyed each other across the quad
Like milk watching lemonade
So I'll grab my Docs, you grab your Crocs
We can toss them together in a great big box
I can do a hop, you can do a slide
And we can dance our way across the divide
I'd never see you with an anime fan
And you'd never see me with a monitor tan
But the way you were looking I fell right in
Just put us in a washer and then press spin
So I'll grab my Docs, you grab your Crocs
We can toss them together in a great big box
I can do a hop, you can do a slide
And we can dance our way across the divide
Some people say fashion is everything
But it wasn't fashion that put my heart on a string
Every step you take I take it too
So I suppose we know what to do
So I'll grab my Docs, you grab your Crocs
We can toss them together in a great big box
I can do a hop, you can do a slide
And we can dance our way across the divide
13. The Mountains of Madness
Run, run, run to the
Mountains of Madness
Gonna
Dance, dance, dance
Dance away the sadness
At the Mountains of Madness
We dance away the sadness
Aurora Borealis
Sparkling Ice Palace
And we sing
To the stars
Bodies twirl
Through the light and dark
And we howl
At the moon
Silver eyes
Shining from the heart
Chorus
Reaching to the sky
Holding back the dark
Pure white blanket over
Cracked rock heart
Mountains of Madness
Enfold us in rapture
Lift us to the summit
Show us the pattern
At the Mountains of Madness
Ecstasy in the vastness
Light shatters in crystal
Right down the middle
And we dance
Spinning 'round
Feeling joy
In the ringing sounds
And we leap
Through the void
We will sail
Far above the clouds
Chorus
14. The Gloriosity of Oppositicus
Hail hail the bright and golden Oppositicus
Wise beyond measure, bold and brash
Contrarion supremico, benevolent despotico
Throwing out the truth with the trash!
Don't tell him what is right: he'll tell you how you're wrong
He gargles with the mouthwash of despair
Just pay him what he wants and give him what he needs
A brand new suit and some lather for his hair
Chorus:
When yes means no and no means yes
It makes a better chorus
He may be rude and he may be crude
But the great
Oppositicus
Will never bore us!
Bhorus:
Lonesome boy, lonesome boy
Remembers a time
He remembers a time long ago
Heartbroken girl, heartbroken girl
Tries not to cry
She tries not to cry but the tears will flow
If he tells you what is blue and then says that it is red
You'd best nod and grin, you Southern Belle
Fall into a swoon like it's 1983
The days before this latest romp thru hell
He's barging into rooms that can barely hold him
He says that day is night and night is day
He makes us swoon with idiot glee
Come out come in and shout and sin and say
Chorus
Bhorus
15. Tug of War
Yeah, you could say I've got some pull
Roped into a life that's a little too full
In the first month she yanked me into the snow
And next month perfected her Valentine's throw
As the Ides approached I was full of dread
That she was pulling me into the land of the dead
Chorus:
And now I'm gonna have me one more beer
And hope that these tug-o-war tug-o-war tears,
these tangled up tug-o-war tug-o-war tears
Don't last all year
Well you tugged me and I tugged you
To a standoff in our domestic stew
And our April showers brought only May sours
Our mouths puckered up no kisses but glowers
We fought through all of the longest day
Could hardly face that we're only half way
Chorus
This is not the way I want to pull my weight
I want to drop this rope before it's too late
But then she'll just use it to tie a noose
There's got to be some way I can get loose
Well after a while we started getting worn out
But the grip on the rope was never in doubt
We dragged each other as the fireworks flew
It was Et Tu Brute as the temperature grew
And on Patriot Day I'll be a traitor to you
And I'll be the ants in your trick or treat too
You'll give no thanks that you're holding that rope
And Santa will give me no reason for hope
Chorus

concept
In Antarctica there is a volcano called Mount Erebus that spews crystals (not ice crystals but actual minerals). Erebus is the "personification of darkness" and "the offspring of Chaos" in Greek mythology. Erebus is also the name of the British vessel that became trapped in the ice near the North Pole in 1845 serving as the basis for the novel and miniseries, "The Terror". There is a glacial waterfall which is as red as blood and contains some of the same elements. Its name, appropriately enough, is "Blood Falls". Should you choose to believe it, you will find an entrance to the city of the elder gods or a portal to the center of the earth. You may find yourself in an abandoned Nazi base or abducted by aliens or you may find yourself drifting into the soft slumber of an eternal frozen sleep.
Polar opposites. Magnetosphere, positive and negative, the great magnet of the Earth that shields us from the Sun's eternal fury. Frozen wastes, ghosts of lost expeditions. Polar Opposites. A balancing act or a metaphor for the irreconcilable. Do opposites attract or, as in magnetism, repel? All the standard dichotomies array themselves: marshmallows and concrete, silence and sirens, slippers and steel-toed boots.
